Perth, CUT -- Mr Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono, younger son of the President of Indonesia, was among 400 students to graduate at Curtin University of Technology on Saturday 26 February, said Curtin University Public Relations and Marketing Office on Monday.
Mr Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono was awarded a Bachelor of Commerce degree. His mother, Mrs Ani Bambang Yudhoyono, the First Lady of Indonesia, attended the graduation ceremony.
Mr Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono will return to Indonesia after graduation and may work with the President before pursuing a career in banking or in government. He said Curtin was well known in Indonesia.
''It is a very well known Australian university in Indonesia and its proximity to Jakarta made it easy to decide where to study.''
He said he had enjoyed his time at Curtin and looked forward to employing the knowledge he obtained at Curtin in life after university. He will also fondly remember, and miss, the warmth of his Australian friends and classmates.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Lance Twomey said he would be honoured to welcome the First Lady to the University.
''Curtin has a strong international focus, with over 100 countries represented in our student body,'' he said.
''International students greatly enrich the cultural life on campus, adding new dimensions to study and social activities and offering all students the opportunity to develop lifelong personal and professional relationships with their counterparts from other countries.''
Professor Twomey said there was a long tradition in Australian higher education, encompassing the Colombo Plan of the 1950s and the Rhodes and Fulbright scholarships, which recognised the importance of students of all countries gaining a broader, more international perspective.
''Curtin was among the pioneers of international education in Australia and the University still strongly supports this approach,'' he said.
Professor Twomey said he was pleased Mr Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono had enjoyed his time at Curtin and encouraged him to become an active member of the University's Alumni. ©
